Sarnath MapThe Deer Park in Sarnath is where Buddha spoke of the middle way to Nirvana. ten kilometres from Varanasi, Sarnath contains numerous Stupas, the first of which was erected by Emperor Ashok & it now is of the largest Buddhist ruins. Also on the site are the excavated ruins of monasteries & Ashoka Pillar with its four-sided lions heads. The museum has a quantity of the best examples of Buddhist art. The DhamekhThe Deer Park in Sarnath is where Buddha spoke of Nirvana, in his first sermon called turning of the wheel . ten kilometres from Varanasi, Sarnath contains numerous Stupas, the first of which was erected by Emperor Ashok & it now is of the largest Buddhist ruins. In the 12th century, Sarnath came under assault & the monastery was destroyed & the monks fled. Sarnath was seldom built up again.

Also on the site are the excavated ruins of monasteries & Ashoka Pillar with its four-sided lions heads., which symbolise the spread of Buddha’s teachings. The museum has a quantity of the best examples of Buddhist art. It also houses the Lion Capital, which one time was the crowning glory of the Ashok Pillar, today being the official symbol of the Indian state. The Dhamekha stupa is 33 metres high, dating back to around 500BC & is the most striking sight in Sarnath.

Dharmarajika Stupa is in front of Ashok Pillat, which marks the spot where Buddha gave his first sermon.
