Ranakpur Map

Ranakpur is a village located between Jodhpur & Udaipur, in a valley on the western side of the Aravelli Range in the state of Rajasthan. Ranakpur is widely known for its marble Jain temple, & for the much older Sun Temple. Ranakpur boasts Jain temples.
Built in 1439, the main Jain temple at Ranakpur is dedicated to Adinath. Known as the Chaumukha Temple, or Four-Faced Temple, this large and superbly crafted building possesses 29 halls supported by an astonishing 1444 pillars, no similar. The temple, with its distinctive domes, shikhara, turrets and cupolas rises majestically from the slope of a hill.
The dating of the temple is controversial though it is largely thought about to be anywhere between the late 14th to mid-15th centuries. Inspired by a dream of a celestial vehicle, Dharna Shah, a Porwad, is said to have commissioned it, under the patronage of Rana Kumbha, then ruler of Mewad. The temple was purportedly nominated as of the top 77 wonders in a contest to Seven Wonders of the World.
Within the complex are other Jain temples to Neminath and Parasnath. The temples boast stunning carvings similar to those of Khajuraho.
