Kovalam
16 km from Thiruvananthapuram city in the state of Kerala, the internationally renowned beach resort of Kovalam on the Arabian Sea has been a favourite haunt of tourists since 1960's. Kovalam consists of, comparatively little, stretches of sand. The seaport of Vizhinjam nearby is famous for its special varieties of fish, elderly Hindu temples, massive church buildings as well as a mosque.

The southernmost beach, known as the Lighthouse Beach, is the most popular. And, yes, the beach does possess a massive lighthouse on its promontory! On the other side of the little, rocky headland is Hawah Beach, which is often peppered with fishermen, who hand-haul nets containing their every day catch. One time the beach to green light ‘topless’ sunbathing, it is now no longer allowed. North of the headland is Kovalam Beach and Samudra Beach. The shoreline is dotted with accommodation and places to eat and shop.

Water sports, catamaran cruising, yoga, meditation & rejuvenating Ayurvedic treatments are popular distractions in idyllic Kovalam. Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient method of health care that is native to the Indian subcontinent. Ayurveda roughly translates as the "knowledge of life". Ayurvedic treatments, be it massage or a cure for common ills, is considerably lower in cost in India than in the West.

St. Thomas, the apostle of Jesus Christ, who introduced Christianity to India, is believed to have visited Kothamangalam & converted several families to the Christian faith.
