Kargil
Kargil town is halfway between Srinagar & Leh & is the second largest urban centre of Ladakh.
A calm town now, historically in the past it served as an important trade and transit centre for the Central-Asian merchants due to its location from Srinagar, Leh and Skardo, all widely known trading outposts on the elderly trade route network.

Being located at the foot of the Himalayas, Kargil serves as an important base for undertaking adventure tourism & journeys to the exotic Zanskar Valley & other Himalayan regions. Trekking, mountaineering, camping & river rafting can all be completed in the vicinity & it is also simple to get to the Wakha - Mulbek valley, with is 9 metre sculpture of Maitreya. Also worth a visit is Suru Valley with its picturesque views of the Himalayas.

The town & its suburban villages lie nestled along the valley method formed by the confluence of the Suru River & its tributary, the Wakha-chhu. The land along the narrow valley floor & the hillsides are neatly terraced & intensively cultivated to grow barely, wheat, peas & several other cereals, besides a variety of vegetables. Thick plantations of poplars & willows, besides rich orchards of apricot, apple & mulberry, adorn the area to form a rich oasis against the backdrop of the undulating mountains. Kargil area is famous for its fine apricots.
