The gigantic and exquisite meadow of Gulmarg lies at a stunning altitude of 2730m and is around 50km southwest of Srinagar in the Jammu and Kashmir region of far northern India. Gulmarg means ‘meadow of flowers’ and it lives up to this description in spring, when there's flowers all over the place at this hill station.

The town witnessed militancy in the 1990s, but after a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in 2003, the town is now enjoying a period of peace and quiet.

The slopes of the Afarwat Hills of the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas permit Gulmarg to offer of the longest & highest ski slopes in Asia. The total distance covered by ski lifts is about 5km. Gulmarg boasts of Asia's highest & longest cable automobile project, the Gulmarg Gondola. The two-stage ropeway ferries about 600 people per hour to & from Kongdoori Mountain, a shoulder of nearby Afarwat Peak (4200m). The ropeway project is a joint venture of the Jammu & Kashmir government & a Italian firm. As such, security is high owing to the investment in tourist & also the propinquity to the Line of Control.
