Baliguda MapBaliguda in the state of Orissa is home to the Kutia Kondh tribe. The Kondhs form mathematically the largest group among the over 60 tribes of Orissa. Historicallyin the past, the Kondhs were renowned for their brutal acts of human sacrifice and infanticide to accomplish better agricultural yield. The Kondhs comprise numerous peoples including the Kutia Kondhs and also the Dongria Kondhs.

The Kutia & Dongria Kondh tribes are specialist agriculturalists & possibly the most primitive of Orissa’s tribes. Basically attired in clothes, females wear cloths for modesty, whilst Kutia men tend to wear a loin cloth. Dongria men wear an extended cloth. Dongria Kondh females tend to be raring to go on ornamentals & adorn themselves with hairpins, earrings, nose rings & headwear. Kondh males tend to wear bracelets & earrings & most often sport long hair knotted at the nape. The Kutia Kondhs also tattoo their faces & hands.

Capable farmers, the Kondh’s toil the land producing funds crops of turmeric, mustard, ginger, arrowroot & so forth. Fruit crops are also grown by cross-sections of the Kondh. Bartering is a lifestyle amongst the Kondhs. Keen on fermented palm sap with added herbs & roots, this beverage is alcoholic & used for rituals & also consumed as part of the Kondh’s every day life, irrespective of gender or age.
