Allahabad mapSituated, at 238 km from the state capital Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, Allahabad is of the sacred cities of India & a important centre for culture, administration, & schooling. The city is refered to in the sacred scriptures, including the Vedas, Puranas, the Mahabharata , & the Ramayana, as Prayag. The city was a centre of the Indian National Congress and at the conference here in I920, Mahatma Gandhi proposed his programme of nonviolent resistance to accomplish independence.
